James F. Sallis, Ph.D is Professorial Fellow at Australian Catholic University, Melbourne and Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health at University of California San Diego. He was trained in psychology and behavioral epidemiology. His health improvement programs have been studied and used in health care settings, schools, universities, and companies. His current research interests are promoting physical activity and understanding policy and environmental influences on physical activity, nutrition, and obesity. This research has been conducted across all age groups in the US. Dr. Sallis is co-founder of the International Physical Activity and Environment Network (IPEN) that has conducted coordinated studies of adults and adolescents in numerous countries. He has authored over 800 scientific publications and is one of the world’s most cited authors in any field, with over 200,000 citations (Google Scholar. He is currently focusing on getting research used to create healthier cities. Marc Adams is a Professor and Program Director of the Population Health program at the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University.
As a behavioral scientist with a cross-disciplinary background in health behavior change, epidemiology, and public health, Marc is dedicated to developing interventions aimed at enhancing physical activity and behavioral nutrition. His approach utilizes ecological health models and encompasses both temporal and spatial assessments of behaviors and their environmental determinants.
He is particularly interested in the development of innovative measures, such as GIS assessments of place/context and AI-powered analyses of pedestrian environmental features, which are aligned with his research objectives. His work primarily investigates the interactions between individual-level interventions and urban form, alongside other environmental contexts. His research, funded by the NIH, has pioneered new metrics and interventions at the intersection of neighborhood environments—for instance, urban planning—and technology-driven behavior change programs that promote physical activity and healthy eating, thereby advancing public and population health.
Joining the IPEN Coordinating Center in 2009, Marc led the creation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) protocols utilized by international teams and has conducted comparability assessments across various countries and cities for both the IPEN Adult and IPEN Adolescent studies. His research highlighted significant international differences in urban design and walkability, revealing the extensive variations in urban features across the cities and countries involved in the study. Marc has published over 120 articles on these subjects in leading journals.
