IPEN Adolescent Research Team

Primary Investigator

Jorge received my Ph.D. in Sport Sciences, from the Faculty of Sport Sciences in Porto (Portugal). During this PhD he did an internship in Deutsche Sporthochüle Köln (Germany) and spent part of his sabbatical semester in San Diego State University (USA). He is a Professor of Sports, Recreation and Leisure as well as on Health Education and Promotion at the Faculty of Sport Sciences (Portugal).

Jorge was a former dean of Faculty of Sports during a two-year appointment (1996-1998). He was also President of Faculty Scientific Board (2006-2010), as well as President of General Assembly until 2016. Since 2004 he’s been the Director of Research Centre in Physical Activity Health and Leisure, supported from Portuguese Scientific Foundation.

Jorge was also involved on the development and implementation of programs related to physical activity and health promotion. He has authored over 200 papers published in peer-review journals. Jorge joined the IPEN network when it launched. He led the Portuguese team participation on IPEN Adolescent data collection studies.

Paula Maria Santos

Maria Paula Santos has a PhD in Sports Science from the University of Porto in Portugal. She is a professor at the Faculty of Sport of the University of Porto, in the area of Physical Activity and Exercise in Health Promotion. She is also a researcher at the Research Centre in Physical Activity, health and Leisure (CIAFEL). Lastly, she is also a member of the Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health (ITR), Porto, Portugal. Her research interests include the environmental and social determinants of physical activity in different populations, urban health and physical activity in leisure and transport.

She is one of the principal investigators in the IPEN Adolescents in Portugal. The study evaluated young people in the metropolitan area of Porto.

Andreia Pizarro Andreia

Andreia Pizarro is an assistant professor at Faculty of Sports in Porto university, being a member of the scientific board and of the scientific committee of 2nd cycle in physical activity, exercise and health. She holds a master’s degree and PhD in physical activity and health where she developed and published studies in active commuting, built environment and health, since 2009.

Andreia joined the IPEN Adolescent around 2013 and was responsible for the data collection in Portugal. Andreia, alongside physical activity determinants in children, is also studying the older adult population and is involved in a few European union funded projects.
